Where Did the World Come From?
The World card has always been the 21st and the final one in the Major Arcana of tarot. In 15th century, it usually depicted a figure on a globe surrounded by the four evangelists who were symbols of the fixed zodiac signs. It is all about completion and new cycle.
The Rider-Waite-Smith deck gave us the card which depicts a dancing figure in the wreath of laurel surrounded by the four creatures in the celestial sky.
The Symbols on the World Card
So let's examine the symbols of this card focusing on RWS deck.
The Central Figure
Dancing. And not static – this is an active figure. Completion does not mean death, it means celebration of it. This figure is not masculine nor feminine – it shows an integrated personality, someone who managed to integrate all these qualities in one whole.
The Laurel Wreath
Surrounds the central figure. Symbolizes victory and completion which lasts forever as laurel wreath is evergreen. This means that what you've achieved became a part of your essence.
The Four Creatures
They are in the corners of the card. Bull, lion, eagle, angel. Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius – the four fixed signs of the Zodiac. They represent four elements. It means that you have managed to integrate everything.
Wands
Are held by the figure. Action and manifestation – not only did you achieve the goal, you also actively participated in its completion.
Sky
It is blue and open. It's not limited, it's boundless and infinite. The World card is not about limitation – it opens you up.
What Does the World Really Mean
The World means completion. But not the end of everything – the end of one more cycle. You have completed something important – a project, a stage of life, a lesson which had to be learned.
And you have not just completed it – you have managed to integrate it in yourself. You have changed for better – you are wiser now, you are more whole than before.
The thing is that the World card is not only about completion – it is also about beginning. The Fool is at zero, the World is at 21 – but then the next cycle will start. You won't stay at the World – you'll take what you've learned and you'll start all over again.
The World is a threshold. One door closes – another opens.
The World When It's Upright
Big Message: You've done it. You've completed something important and it is time to celebrate it!
This card doesn't encourage you to keep going – on the contrary, it tells you to stop and appreciate it.

Upright
In the love reading the World card means that you've reached a place of wholeness – in your relationship or within yourself.
If you are in the relationship, it means that you have reached an important milestone in your relationship. Deeper connection, new level of commitment or partnership which is balanced and complete.
If you are single, this card is about being whole on your own. You do not need a partner to complete yourself because you are complete already and this is what will attract your soulmate.
This card can also mean that your relationship has come to the end. Not because it's a failure – it is just the completion of the cycle. Time to move on.
Reversed
Reversed World card in a love reading means that there's something which blocks the completion. You are too afraid to commit, maybe you are holding on to something that should be over already, you don't give yourself permission to celebrate your achievements.
The work to be done: ask yourself what is holding you back from appreciating the completion of the cycle and what are you afraid of.
The World in Career and Finances
Upright
In the career reading this card is about successful completion which is visible and noticeable. You have reached an important milestone in your career. Promotion, completed project, a big career step.
This is the card of graduation. You've completed your job or phase and you are ready for the next step.
Finances-wise the World card tells about your stability and abundance. You have something solid and you are in a good place now. You are not rich – but you are sure of yourself and you are ready to move further.
Reversed
At work the reversed World card means that you are close to the success but something is stopping you. Your perfectionism is preventing you to move on, you are too afraid of what lies ahead of you, you are still holding on to something that should be over.
The work to be done: stop waiting for perfection. Finish the thing and trust that you'll know how to deal with it.
The World in Health and Well-being
Upright
In the health reading this card means integration. Your body, mind and spirit are in harmony now and you have reached the state of well-being after the struggle.
It can be:

- new level of your fitness or vitality
- mental clarity and peace
- wholeness in your body
Reversed
The reversed World card in health reading means that there's something which stops you from reaching the state of well-being. Maybe you are ignoring the health problems you have, maybe you are not integrating your physical and psychological health.

Reversed World card does not mean that something bad happens to you but it means that you're not quite there yet.
