The Magician in Tarot Meaning: You Already Have Everything You Need
April 7, 2025The Magician is the first card of the Major Arcana that tells you to do something.
The Fool (0) is the first step on your journey. The Magician (1) is the second step. The Magician is the point where you stop dreaming about what you should do and start doing it.
He does not need any permissions or good timing. He does not ask for anybody's help. All the necessary tools are already on the table. You just need to reach out for them.
That is the main message of this card. These tools were always there. You just needed to realize it.
History of The Magician
The Magician is not always this strong. This card had an absolutely different meaning back in the days.
Back in the 15th century, this card was called "Mountebank". It was the name for a traveling performer or entertainer who performed on the streets. He was usually doing some tricks and earning money. And he could even pick your pocket while you're enjoying the show.
The Mountebank was associated with deception, illusions, and sleight of hand. The magic was viewed as a combination of entertainment and betrayal. So this was the origin of the card.
Then came the era of Renaissance, when there was increasing interest in hermeticism and alchemy. The Mountebank became a scholar of these subjects. He knew things that ordinary people did not know. And his tools were no longer props for tricks but symbols of four elements – Earth, Air, Fire, and Water.
Later in the 19th century, came the Victorian occultism and Eliphas Levi. He connected this card with Mercury, the planet associated with communication, intellect, and agility. The Magician started to symbolize a link between the spiritual and the material world. He could bring an idea from the realm of thought into reality.
In the Rider-Waite deck, the Magician became completely formed. It became the card of a confident man who stands before a table of tools, his hands raised one up and the other down: "As above, so below." Infinite possibilities of manifestation.
The Magician came a long way from the street performer.
Symbols on the Card
Noticing the symbols on the card is crucial for its understanding. We discuss the Rider-Waite-Smith version of the Magician.

The Four Tools
On the table: a wand, a cup, a sword, and a pentacle. Fire, Water, Air, and Earth. The suits of the Minor Arcana. Four elements of creation.
These are not just props of the Magician. These are the tools you already have. The instruments of manifestation.
The Raised Wand
One of the magician's hands points up, another points down. He is a channel. He brings the energy of the upper plane into the reality. That is how manifestation works. It is not about wishing or hoping. It is about channeling.
The Infinity Symbol
On top of the Magician's head is the lemniscate. Infinite potential of manifestation. No beginning and no end.
The Garden
Lush, fertile, full of roses and lilies. It is the environment for the manifestation.
The Magician does not work in a vacuum. He creates in a world alive and ready to receive. The results of his manifestations need to grow.
The Belt
The symbol of an ouroboros. Eternal renewal. Death and rebirth. The Magician knows that creation is not a one-time event. It is a process of cycles.
Who Is the Magician?
The Magician is the one who knows how to create something.
Not because he is smarter or more talented. Because he knows how to use the tools that are available to him. He knows his resources. He knows his power.
He is resourceful. Confident. Focused. He does not waste his time. He does not get distracted. He sees what needs to be done and does it.
He is the entrepreneur who launches a business. He is an artist who starts a project. He is a healer who channels energy. He is a scientist who does the experiments. He is a writer who starts writing on the empty sheet of paper.
He is anyone who turned an idea into something real.
The shadow side of the Magician? Manipulation. Tricks. Using his power not for good but to harm and deceive. The Mountebank did not disappear but just hid in disguise. When the Magician is unbalanced, he can turn into a con artist who is doing everything for his own profit and pleasure.
But when the Magician is balanced? He becomes an inspiration. He proves that you can do this. You have all the tools.
What the Magician Really Means
The Magician is manifestation. Not an abstract or "woo-woo" manifestation. A real, practical manifestation.
The Magician is the one who reminds us that we are the creators of our reality. We have agency. We have resources. We have a power to shape the reality as we see it fit.
