The Empress Card: Creation, Abundance, and the Power of Nurturing

January 25, 2025

The Empress is the mother of all tarot cards.

Not in a cute Hallmark card sense, but in the wild, primal and life-giving sense. She's the unstructured nature, the force that gives birth to anything and everything, whether it's a baby, idea, business, or even whole world – without permission or apologies.

The Empress is creation. Period.

Where The Empress Comes From

In the old tarot decks, of 15th century Italy and tarocchi games, Empress was the queen in all her splendor. A crown, a throne, a scepter, and even sometimes the Black Eagle shield of the Holy Roman Empire in her dress.

She was the earthly power and the authority, female counterpart to the Emperor.

However, with time the Empress acquired another dimension: the Great Mother, the divine feminine, the Venus energy: love, beauty, fertility, the messy yet magnificent power of creation.

It was only by the time of the appearance of the Rider-Waite tarot deck in 1909 when she was finally transformed completely. An actual woman sitting in a garden with stars on her head, surrounded by abundance of her creation.

And A.E. Waite himself calls her "universal fecundity" – or, in less sophisticated terms, life itself in full bloom in all directions.

All of that history is what the Empress carries.

The Symbols on the Card

Let's walk through the symbols on the card from the Rider-Waite-Smith deck.

The Empress Tarot Card

The Crown of Stars

Twelve stars on her head are not random. Each star represents one of the zodiac signs and shows that she's connected to the heaven, to the spirituality and not just bound to the earthly plane. There are decks which arrange them in actual astronomical constellations. An additional bonus for the astrologers among us.

The Venus Symbol

On the shield or in the background. Not the romantic side of Venus, but the raw creative power: it creates babies, art, businesses, and whatever you need in life.

Many people resonate with this particular symbol, because it reminds them of one simple truth: they can create.

The Scepter

She holds it, but not with tyrannical force. She rules with wisdom and not with authority and that's what shows that her power comes from inside her, not domination over others.

The Flowing River

There's usually the river, or any form of water somewhere nearby. It's always flowing. And the power that flows with it, changing and recreating everything it touches, is the true power.

The Garden

Abundant, fertile, full of life. This is her realm, not a throne room. Because the Empress doesn't rule from above, but she creates from within.

Who Is the Empress?

She's the mother. But she's not just the mother of her children, but the mother of her creations – ideas, projects, art pieces, businesses, anything that requires nurturing to grow.

Yes, she's nurturing, but she's also powerful. Not in an aggressive way, but in a confident "I know what I'm doing and I'll protect my creation anyway" way.

She's patient. She allows her creations to grow, providing them with necessary conditions and waiting until they do.

Her shadow side? Smothering her creations and over-nurturing them. Neglecting her own needs while trying to take care of all those around. Becoming so involved in nurturing others that she becomes oblivious of her own needs.

She's the person who tends to other people's gardens and forgets about watering her own.

What The Empress Really Means

The Empress is abundance. Not just material, but the emotional, creative, spiritual one. She's the reminder that life is creative and that we're capable of creating something new. That there's always more where that came from.

She's about the patience: gardens are not growing in one night and ideas are not being created suddenly. The message of the Empress is: plant the seeds, nurture them and trust the process.

Also she's about the self-worth: not egomania, but knowing that you're worthy of existing, of being seen, of creating.

The Empress in Career and Finances

Upright

In the work-related readings, the Empress means growth. Not hustle or hard work or burnout, but organic growth.

If you're managing a project, the Empress tells you to treat it as you would do to your garden: regular attention and patience.

She also points towards the mentorship: learning from those who went before you and teaching those who came after. The Empress knows how knowledge is created and grown.

In finances, she means the steady and stable abundance: the investments that mature, savings that grow, resources that are available for you to use.

Reversed

The reversed Empress in the work context means that your creative processes are stalled. Either the ideas stopped coming to you, or you're forcing your creative processes into submission.

It can also mean that you're investing too much of your energy into your work and forgetting about yourself: it means the burnout or exhaustion.

The work is to step back, to relax and to reconnect with the original reason why you started.

The Empress in Love and Relationship Readings

Upright

In the context of love reading, the Empress means nurturing and abundance. Again, it's not romantic love, but all forms of it: love for family, friendship and self-love.

In a relationship, she means deep and supportive bond between two people, where both people feel taken care of and have enough space to grow.

For a single person, she doesn't mean chasing after love, but rather becoming someone worthy of receiving it. Someone who is whole enough to share her life with another person – not someone searching for fulfillment outside of herself.

She can also mean pregnancy, a newborn, or a creative project that is like a baby to you.

Reversed

The reversed Empress in love suggests imbalance: either one partner is giving too much, while another one is taking all that, or both partners are so obsessed with taking care of others that they forgot to take care of themselves.

It can also mean smothering love: caring so much about someone that it became controlling. Or it can mean emotionally detached love: just going through the motions, but without really connecting.

The work here is to check your giving: are you nurturing something from the place of your wholeness and abundance or you're pouring your energy from an empty cup?

The Empress says: you can't pour from an empty vessel.

The Empress in Health and Well-being

Upright

In the health readings, the Empress means nurturing and nourishing. However, not only through the food, but through the rest, movement, connections, joy – whatever feeds you.

It can mean that you're healing or your body is coming back into its natural rhythms. That you're listening to its needs and nurturing it accordingly.

Or it can mean that you focus on the questions of your reproductive health, on your fertility or simply go back to the basics of nurturing yourself: good food, good rest, good company.

Reversed

In the context of the health, the reversed Empress is the warning about the neglect. You're so obsessed with taking care of others that you forgot to take care of yourself.

It can mean emotional eating or simply neglecting the signals of your body. Or even health problem that you have been ignoring because you've been too busy to notice it.

The work is to stop, rest and nurture yourself. You can't take care of anyone if you're falling apart.

The Empress in Personal Growth and Spiritual Questions

Upright

In the spiritual context, the Empress means creativity and intuition. She's not the High Priestess, she doesn't carry the secrets inside herself. She carries the power of creating something tangible and making your visions real.

The message of the Empress is: trust your gut instincts, spend time in nature and create without worrying about the results.

Reversed

The reversed Empress can mean creative block or self-doubt. You're holding back. Not allowing yourself to express your intuition and your creative powers.

It can also mean the disconnection from your body, from the earth, from the material world.

When the Empress Reverses

The reversed Empress is not the catastrophe, but the sign that something went wrong.

The messages of the reversed Empress:

  • You're over-giving
  • You're not taking care of yourself
  • Creative block
  • Smothering love
  • Neglecting your own needs

How to work with it:

  • Ask yourself: where am I holding back creatively?
  • Check your giving – is it from the love or obligation?
  • Tending to your own needs is not selfish. It's necessary.
The Empress: Upright vs. Reversed Meanings

The Empress in Context

Let's look at some combinations with the other cards as they are the pure essence of any interpretation:

The Empress + King of Pentacles — your creative work as the source of your income.

The Empress + Five of Pentacles — her nurturing presence is your help during hard times. The Empress is the hope in the darkness.

The Empress + Queen of Swords — heart and mind working together.

The Empress + The Lovers — the relationship that's nurturing and passionate at once.

How to Live The Empress's Energy

Visualization

Close your eyes and imagine a garden in spring: warm sun, soft breeze, greenery all around. Breathe in the energy of the Empress and breathe out everything that doesn't let you grow.

Journaling prompts

  • Where am I holding back creatively?
  • How can I tend to my own needs better?
  • What would it mean for me to fully embrace abundance?

Daily practice

  • Create something small every day: meal, drawing, list.
  • Spend at least five minutes in nature: in a park, in a garden, or even walking to the mailbox.
  • Say no to at least one thing that depletes you.

The Bottom Line

The Empress is creation itself. The power that creates something and nurtures it, the patience that waits for it to bloom.

She's not for women only. She's for creators, nurturers, and people who grow something. She's for people who want to build something and make it last.

The Empress is the reminder that you're capable of creating something, of nurturing it and of making it real in your life.

And she's the reminder that you deserve it.
