Meaning of the Hermit Card: Solitude, Wisdom and Knowing When to Walk Away

April 16, 2025

The Hermit doesn't get his due. People like exciting cards. The Sun. The Star. Something hopeful. The Hermit? The old dude with the lantern on the mountain. Who looks like he's been on the damn mountain for decades.

And the truth is, he has been. The Hermit is not about isolation. It's about solitude with purpose. There is a distinction. A significant one.

Where the Hermit Came From

The Hermit has existed in the early tarot decks. 15th century, Italy. Back then he was already recognizable – old man, a cloak, a lantern and a walking stick.

What's interesting about him is the fact that his meaning did not change throughout centuries. Unlike many other cards, the Hermit remained consistent in meaning.

His essence is introspection. Reflection. Wisdom born of experience.

Rider-Waite deck introduced the version we know and love. But older decks like Visconti-Sforza had variations of their own. But same core. Just different outfits.

Astrologically the Hermit corresponds to signs of Virgo and Mercury. From Virgo – methodological approach. From Mercury – intelligence and communication. Insights gained with Hermit are not to remain secluded. They are meant to be shared eventually.

Who Is the Hermit?

He is the one who walked the road. Quietly. Steadily.

He is the one who does not make a spectacle out of it. Who disappears for some time and returns with the answers only he can give.

He appreciates solitude – not because he dislikes people. Because he knows the deepest truths are found in solitude.

His drive is the quest for meaning. He is not interested in superficial answers. He wants to find out the true workings of the universe.

The shadow side of the Hermit is isolation that turns into a disease. Withdrawal that turns into hiding. He can become the one who spends so much time on the mountain that he forgets how to descend.

In your life, he might manifest as a mentor, a teacher, an elder or as the voice within that tells you to stop and think.

Symbols Used on the Card

The symbolism of this card is profound.

The Hermit Tarot Card

The Lantern

The lantern is the first thing you notice. And what it represents is internal light. Wisdom. Guidance you receive from inside yourself when the way forward is unclear.

Notice how the light is not coming from lantern – it is coming from Hermit himself. Deliberately. The Hermit does not try to shine his light onto the world. His goal is to shed light upon himself.

The Staff

The staff is the sign of support. Accumulated wisdom of years. The thing that keeps him going along his path.

The Mountain

The mountain represents perspective. He stands above everyone else. Not because he is better than everyone else. But because he can see more from there.

The Gray Robe

Gray robe of the Hermit is the symbol of age. Experience. Wisdom of years.

The Hermit in a Career Reading

In the context of the career, the Hermit is the card of expertise.

Perhaps you need to concentrate on acquiring special skills. Be the one who knows the stuff that others don't know.

Maybe you need a mentor. Someone who already walked the path that you are trying to reach.

Maybe you need solitude to reflect and realize what you actually want to do in your career.

The reversed Hermit in career means that you are isolating yourself professionally. Not building relationships, not networking. Not acquiring knowledge. Mistake.

The Hermit in a Love Reading

In the love reading the Hermit almost always means that you need solitude.

To clarify your position, not to escape from the reality.

In case of uncertainty in a relationship the advice of the Hermit would be to reflect before making a decision. Clarify to yourself what you want. Are you afraid of anything? Are there any patterns you bring into this partnership?

In case of being single the Hermit can mean that you need to spend time alone for a while. Not forever. Just to figure out your needs.

The reversed Hermit in love means that you isolate yourself from your partner. Or you avoid intimacy because of fears. Whatever it is – it's time to look inside and see it honestly.

The Hermit in a Health Reading

In the health reading the Hermit usually means that you need rest.

Not laziness. The true rest.

The body and the mind need rest. If you keep pushing yourself beyond exhaustion, the Hermit asks you to stop, listen and recharge.

The reversed Hermit means that you ignore signals that your body sends. Or you refuse from professional treatment because of your fears. That is not wisdom. That is avoidance.

The Hermit in a Spiritual Reading

This is where the Hermit truly shines.

For him spiritual journey is the quest for meaning. The deep meaning that cannot be found from the books or from the gurus or any apps. The meaning that you have to discover for yourself.

It might mean that you will have to engage in some spiritual practices. Meditation. Silence. Solitude in nature.

The reversed Hermit might mean that you got stuck in dogmas and strict belief systems. You are following the path of another one, not yours.

Meanings of the Hermit Card Upright

This is a good card. But not always a pleasant one.

It means that you need to retreat. Take a pause. Stop looking outside yourself and start reflecting.

Perhaps you are struggling to make a decision. Or you feel lost. The Hermit says: stop. Reflect. The answer is not in the external world.

It is not about escape from the world. It is about gaining the necessary perspective to deal with it.

Some things you might do to embody this card: meditate, journal, take a walk alone, refuse from any social obligations for a while.

The key difference between the productive solitude and the unhealthy isolation is that in the former case it is your choice. The Hermit choses to spend his time alone. He is not hiding. He is preparing.

Meanings of the Reversed Hermit Card

The appearance of the reversed Hermit is the warning signal.

You isolate yourself for the wrong reasons. Fear. Avoidance. Too much time on the mountain and losing connections.

The reversed Hermit is the reminder that you took the solitude too far. Time to return from the mountain.

That does not mean the necessity to stop doing the inner work. It means that you need balance. Both are required.

Ask yourself why you withdraw yourself from the relationships and responsibilities. What are you avoiding? What are you afraid of?

In some cases the reversed Hermit is the manifestation of resistance to the very process of reflection.

How to Work With the Energy of the Hermit

Embrace the intentional silence. Not the mere absence of noise. The true quiet.

Start journaling your thoughts. Not to share them somewhere. To see them.

Go for a walk alone. Without your phone. Without podcasts. Without distractions.

Every time you feel the need to escape to the distraction, stop. Ask yourself: what am I avoiding?

And do not spend your time forever on the mountain. Hermit's insights are to be taken from the mountain and applied in the real life.
